Dad's Hat Straight Rye is a whiskey made with Pennsylvania grown rye and aged for a minimum of 4 years before being bottled at 47.5% ABV. The distillery's stated goal is to recreate the aromatic profile of Pennsylvania's Rye whiskey before Prohibition.
It is immediately reached by a marked note of overly ripe orange. The orange is also present in its candied version, all covered with a generous dose of vanilla, a very direct one. Note of seasoned wood, intense and persistent. At a later time a leather hint emerges. Good roundness. In the end it becomes fresher and herbaceous, with menthol and aromatic rye notes.
The entrance is characterized by a sweet spiciness, wood spices with also a more directly woody part, although not too dry or astringent. Decent creaminess. Orange impressions are also back. The alcohol seems well integrated, although the intensity of the fruition remains good. Maple syrup.
Medium duration, with a decent woody size that wraps the palate pleasantly, with also the memory of the very mature orange of the nose and a distant, more balsamic scent.
Dad's Hat Straight Rye is overall a whiskey of good structure, which gives an intense fruition, equipped with a not extremely deep aromatic palette, but a good quality one, with the pleasant addition of the sweet woody spices to the palate. Well balanced and harmonious.
