The Depaz Grande Réserve XO is a blend of rums that have been aged between 8 and 10 years. This is a longer blend compared to the other very popular Depaz Rum, which is the VSOP (the blend of rum is aged around 7 years). The blue label was also used for another version, the vintage 2002.
On the nose, it releases scents of ripe tropical fruit, where dates stand out, flanked by hints of dark chocolate and sherry.
On the palate, the dark chocolate is confirmed, enriched by rich spicy notes and oak wood. Nuances of cloves are then perceivable, followed by a profusion of acacia honey.
The finish is long, with notes of oak, spices and vanilla. A touch of cotton candy and nuts, the latter which recalling the walnut, complete the flavor profile.
Overall, the Depaz Grande Réserve XO needs a little time to give it best to the nose, and it is then rich on the palate. The finish is structured and the flavor profile boasts a nice complexity. A masterfully balanced rum, with marked intensity.
