Dictador is a Colombian rum house based in Cartagena, with roots tracing back to 1913 under the name Destilería Colombiana. XO Platinum is made from first press sugar cane honey, fermented for 60 hours, then distilled 30% in a pot still and 70% in a column still. It is aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-port barrels, along with charred port casks, a treatment that draws out sweet and smoky flavours from the oak. The blend brings together rum aged 25 to 35 years, with the casks re-charred.
Rich coffee notes lead, together with vanilla pod, wood and caramel. Nuts round off the aromatic picture, adding a slightly roasted, dessert-like dimension.
A mix of wood and wood spices opens the palate, with the coffee still well present from the nose. A nice nuttiness develops alongside it, and a hint of amaretto adds a delicate almond-like sweetness to the whole.
Medium persistence. Nuts and wood spices linger, closing on a warm, slightly roasted note.
Overall, the Dictador XO Platinum showcases a good complexity and balance, and it offers a flavor profile that is definitely not common, in a good way. The aromas are harmonious throughout, and the rum boasts a nice complexity that sets it apart from more straightforward Solera-style offerings.
