Egan's Fortitude is a triple distilled release from the company, fully aged in PX casks. The Egan's family has been involved in the Irish Whiskey world since 1800 when Patrick and Henry Egan created the merchants company P. & H. Egan Limited. The innovative spirit of the brothers saw them rapidly expand, ensuring the advancement of their employees and community in Tullamore, as well as their business from general merchants to malt traders, brewers and importers. Today's Egan's Whiskey is an adventure by Jonathan and his cousin Maurice Egan along with longtime friend John Ralph who, in partnership with Intrepid Spirits and family members around the world, decided in 2013 to bring it back to life.
Decadent and very extracted. The PX casks provided a very intense, sweet chocolate aroma with marzipan, prunes and ripe cherries. Raspberry hard candies and sugary crusted marshmellows. Very tasty sultanas, poured in alcohol.
The texture is milky, everything but a triple distilled spirit. Spices are very sweet (cinnamon) and again the sherry influences are pretty dominant, though less chocolate oriented and more fruity. The body is not very intense.
Medium duration, somehow less pleasant when compared to the nose, simpler and more mono-dimensional, on less ripe fruit.
Egan's Fortitude is a very PX sherry-oriented product in terms of aromas, especially at the nose. The triple distillation, very difficult to spot if not told, provided a milky texture and, surprisingly, changed some of the main flavors in the second part of the palatal experience, making the spirit lighter and more fruit-forward, yet diminishing the complexity. A product that overall shows some flows, despite an interesting core.
