Flóki is the flagship single malt of Eimverk Distillery in Iceland, the country's first whisky distillery, run by the Þorkelsson family near Reykjavík and made entirely from Icelandic barley. Because that barley grows at the edge of what the climate allows and is low in starch, the distillery uses considerably more of it per bottle. This Stout Beer Barrel Finish is first matured in American oak and then finished in stout casks from an Icelandic craft brewery; Barrel 3 is a single-cask release bottled at 47% ABV.
On the nose, very vegetal, with scents of wild herbs and wood resin. Pine needles and a touch of marjoram. The vegetal character stands out as the undisputed protagonist.
On the palate, earthy notes, wood polish and vegetal notes. Then pine needles again, now accompanied by cereal.
Medium-short finish, with wood spice.
Overall, the Flóki Stout Beer Barrel Finish is a whisky with a distinctive and unique aromatic palette. It is not especially structured or complex, but the bouquet is unusual, and it is hard to find anything even vaguely similar. Not for everyone. Good aromatic intensity.
