Glen Scotia 18yo is an expression by the Campbeltown distillery which is primarily aged in American oak ex-bourbon casks, then experiencing a 12 months finish in ex-Oloroso casks. The label has been recently updated.
Both the woods have provided their own influences on an interesting creamy malt; there are some evident red fruit dimensions (Stark apple, cherries and ribes, the latter as some notes are quite citrus), sided by a very nice orange. The toffee is also very important, with a particular spicy note which is difficult to dissect, rather funky. Nice, gentle yet deep.
ABV is very well balanced, as the sip is velvety yet intense. Citrus orange peels and dried fruit sweetness with salted caramel evolve into milk chocolate, creamy and rich. Some oakiness, not astringent.
Medium-long, nice and again centered on salted caramel and some complex spices, with a fruity aftertaste.
Glen Scotia 18yo is a nice and complex release, where both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry oaks contribute equally and the spirit itself shines enough with a complex spicy character on a fruity background. Classic, yet very interesting sip after sip.
