Glendalough 7yo Mizunara

Glendalough 7yo Mizunara is a single malt Irish whiskey. Triple distilled from 100% Irish malted barley and matured for seven years in ex-bourbon American oak casks, the whisky is then transferred into Mizunara oak casks sourced from the volcanic forests of Hokkaido, Japan, for a finishing period of eight to twelve months. "Mizunara" means "water oak", and it takes two centuries to reach maturity, requires three years of drying before coopering, and is so notoriously difficult to work with that only the most skilled Japanese coopers can shape it into casks. Its extraordinary porosity, often seen as a flaw, is in fact what makes it so prized: the spirit penetrates deep into the wood, drawing out a complex array of aromatic compounds.

TASTING NOTES - GLENDALOUGH POT STILL PEATED

Nose

Fresh and immediately inviting, with delicate wood resin, vanilla pod, and clean oak setting the tone. A hint of nail varnish adds an intriguing aromatic edge, and with a little time in the glass, toasted cereals emerge quietly in the background, adding warmth and depth.

Palate

Enveloping and remarkably smooth, with a roundness that belies its relatively young age. Rich vanilla, acacia honey, and orange zest lead, followed by gentle wood spice and a subtle balsamic note. Licorice root and toasted oak develop towards the finish, adding structure and grip without ever becoming heavy.

Finish

Long and gently spiced, with wood spice and balsamic notes carrying through to a clean, quietly warming close.

Overall, the Glendalough 7yo Mizunara is a complex whisky that earns your focus. Smooth, yet structured and well-balanced in character, this is a whisky shaped by the quiet influence of an extraordinary wood. The Mizunara finish elevates rather than transforms, adding an exotic aromatic dimension to an already accomplished Irish single malt.
