Glendalough Pot Still Peated is a 2025 release from the Irish distillery using both malted and unmalted barley, distilled in traditional copper pot stills, and aged for over seven years. This whiskey begins its maturation journey in ex-bourbon American oak casks. It then spends an additional four years in sustainably sourced Virgin Irish Oak from Greenan Forest in Wicklow.
The creamy and sweet profile of Glendalough malt is the first impression, with light custard, honey, apples. The light, gentle, earthy peat is then added with toasted oak and a distant touch of spices. The pot still spicy kick is not very evident.
Creamy and with a great mouthfeel, with baked apple, warming spices (much more present than in the nose), almonds, and a subtle smokiness that adds depth.
Medium duration, with semi-sweet spices, a touch of almond and earthiness.
Glendalough Peated is overall a quite varied product, with several different layers of tastes which are making the fruition dynamic and enjoyable. Unconventional, a whiskey worth exploring.
