Glendalough Single Cask Madeira Finish is a 2019 release from the Irish Distillery. It is specified that the casks used for the finish have been previously used to age Madeira Portuguese wine following the "Canteiro" method; this is the traditional aging technique used in this type of fortified wine, which means that casks are placed immediately under the roofs for the first months, to then be moved at lower heights with time. This method allows the wine to experience first higher temperatures, to then have lower ones.
Sugary, but somehow closed at the very beginning. A sweet winey component is immediately evident, with candied fruit, sweet and juicy sultanas, a minor hint of tropical fruit. Some sweet toast and a dusty sensation. Vanilla.
Simple and direct, dry, again on a not sophisticated yet pleasant sweetness of cotton candy and fruit (golden apple the most intense), with nuts. A subtle slightly bitter note, licorice.
Short, again on the sweet side, with sweet wine and orange peel.
Glendalough Single Cask Madeira Finish is a release quite strong in terms of influences provided by the cask; the Madeira wine barrels provided a major sweet winey character, while the first-fill bourbon oak casks contributed with vanilla and yellow fruit. The result is nice in terms of aromas variety, with some interesting licorice addition, yet very sweet and not in a sophisticated way. Price is very clever, for an exceptional quality to price ratio.
