Hampden Estate has been distilling rum in Jamaica's Trelawny Parish since 1753. This Overproof Classic is a four-year-old pot-distilled rum bottled at 60% without any added sugar or colourings, made exclusively from the HLCF mark, which stands for Hampden Light Continental Flavoured. HLCF is one of several marks produced at the estate for rums with a high concentration of esters, ranging from 400 to 600 g/hlpa. The rum is produced through wild fermentation in open-top cedar vats and 100% pot still distillation, fully matured in the tropical Jamaican climate.
Tropical fruits dominate from the start, recalling jackfruit and the green, grassy sweetness of vesou alongside sugar cane nuances. After a while, cherry in spirit emerges, adding a darker, more macerated dimension to the fruit-driven profile.
Spices arrive first, followed by cocoa and coconut, then roasted notes that bring depth and weight. Tropical fruit nuances persist throughout, tying the palate back to the nose without ever letting the high ester character feel overwhelming.
