Hee Joy is a French rum brand founded by Jean-Marc Larhanthec, whose name is an anagram of "Hey Joe", the song made famous by Jimi Hendrix and emblematic of the hippie generation that inspired the brand's ethos. Each rum in the range is blended in the Grande Champagne region of Charente, then aged in old cognac casks to enhance the character of each distillery's distillates. The VSOP Dominican Republic is sourced from the Oliver & Oliver distillery, one of the most renowned houses on the island, distilled from molasses in a column still to obtain a light style, then double-aged: first for 5 years in American ex-bourbon oak barrels in a tropical climate, followed by a further period in ex-cognac casks in Hee Joy's cellars in Charente.
The alcohol is perceivable on the nose despite the relatively modest ABV. Mineral notes and citrus open things up, followed by vanilla and fruity aromas.
Caramel leads on the palate, joined by vegetal notes and a touch of fruit recalling plum. Wood arrives next and stays present, with a noticeably dry character that keeps the mid-palate from becoming too sweet.
Medium-long. Wood and caramel confirm themselves, closing in a straightforward and consistent manner.
Overall, the Hee Joy VSOP Dominican Republic is a rum with good intensity and a finish that punches above its ABV. That said, the flavor profile is not particularly wide, and the overall complexity of the bouquet is somewhat limited.
