Infrequent Flyers Bowmore 1997 24yo is an independently bottled whisky from Alistair Walker. The spirit was distilled in June 1997 and aged for the entire 24 years into a virgin oak barrel (cask 2690). In September 2021, the cask was opened and the spirit bottled for a total outturn of 252 bottles.
Very fragrant, rich in fruity and vanilla essence; apple compote, fresh butter, coconut, lemon flowers. A minor touch of salt and coastal hint, with a think, classy suggestion of smoke. Quite integrated, despite the contrast between peat and buttery virgin oak notes.
The sip features a very nice ABV, rich yet silent. It is still buttery and high quality vanilla-centered, yet more fruity sensations are present, such as ripe peached on top of the same apple compote of the nose. Some spices are moving through, nutmeg mainly but also sweeter cinnamon. The coastal, lightly peated spirit comes through at the end of the palatal experience.
As a continuation of the palate, the mouth is still buttery and nuanced, with the light peat coming more interesting in length. Some oaky components.
Infrequent Flyers Bowmore 1997 24yo is overall a very nice crafting exercise; in our memory only few Bowmore in virgin oak can be remembered, and we believe there are several risks in aging for such a long time the Islay spirit in this type of casks. Here however the knowledge on wood is so advanced that the result is centered and well integrated, a buttery, fruity vanilla masterpiece of great ABV and a symphony of tastes.
