The J.M distillery has been producing rhum agricole at Fonds-Préville, on the northern tip of Martinique, since 1845. Nestled in the foothills of Mount Pelée, it harvests sugarcane from the surrounding Habitation Bellevue estate, pressing the juice within an hour of cutting. The XO is distilled from pure cane juice in traditional copper Creole column stills, then aged for a minimum of 6 years in re-charred ex-bourbon barrels under the tropical climate of the island, and bottled at 45%.
Vanilla and vegetal hints. The alcohol is perceptible. After a few moments, aromas of ripe fruit emerge, with plums standing out. Wood spices.
Sweet, with wood spices, vanilla and ripe fruit. The alcohol is slightly perceptible.
Medium persistence. Wood spices. Vegetal nuances.
Overall, the Rhum J.M XO delivers an harmony that somewhat fails to shine. The alcohol, although not particularly high, is a little perceptible on both the nose and the palate.
