Kavalan Lan is a 2024 release from the Taiwanese distillery. It is said to be a tribute to Yilan, the birthplace of Kavalan distillery. Its name, also symbolizing the Chinese character for 'orchid', reflects the island's revered standing as the Kingdom of Orchids.
Very rich and immediately open, with an intense flowery bouquet. It seems a little constructed and slightly artificial, however pleasant. The main character is sided by a minor ripe fruit jam sensation, which is not too sugary. Little simple and probably too vivid on the flowery side. The name seems to be very true to the spirit.
The palate is on the contrary little "empty" and slightly "watery". The fruity side is much less evident, while a nutty minor astringent note reminds of the port casks. The chocolaty, rather fondant, aspect is probably the best of the notes.
Medium-short, slightly dry, not truly inviting to a new sip.
Kavalan Lan is not a truly convincing release. There is for sure a certain coherence between the name and the initial nose, however this first part appears little "artificially" mellow and flowery, like a lab-constructed product. On the other side the palate is rather empty and watery, with only some interesting chocolaty notes to stand out. Not enough when compared to other recent releases from the distillery.
