Kavalan Concertmaster Sherry Finish is the second release from the Taiwanese distillery belonging to the Concertmaster series. It is first matured in the distillery's own refilled whisky casks and is then finished in sherry casks from Spain.
Fresh modern sherry, with a touch reminding of virgin oak bottlings. There is a creamy dimension of yellow fruit (banana, apple compote) with custard and tons of vanilla, which soon moves into red not too ripe fruit (unripe cherries, cranberries). A touch of lemon with its flowers and a minor nuttiness. Very perfumery, yet pleasant.
Minor tangy components, reminding again the cranberries of the nose, with grapefruit and pineapple. The second palate is warmer and rounder, with the creamy yellow fruit becoming more important but still in the background.
Medium duration, some woody components from the ex-bourbon casks coming upfront.
Kavalan Concertmaster Sherry Finish is a very nice craft, where both the influences of ex-bourbon (first fill?) and ex-sherry casks are evident and reasonably well integrated for a NAS product. There is certain freshness and richness; despite the basic ABV of 40% the spirit never gives a "watery" impression. A nice, easy to drink experience, centered on varied fruit and an outstanding vanilla quality.
