Kavalan Triple Sherry is a release dated November 2021 from the Taiwanese Distillery, which is using a unique combination of Oloroso, Pedro Ximenez and Moscatel Sherry casks to age the intense spirit of this brand. Opposite to current market trend, the bottling is 40% ABV.
The profile is immediately rather intense and rich, with sweet tones of sultana and figs, ripe red fruit (strawberry jam), with a drop of honey. Something floral and delicate, pleasant. Mild milk chocolate. The winey and oaky characters are more distant. Sweetness is round and charming.
Rather intense for just 40% ABV, centered on red fruit and sultana, but with a slightly bitter note reminding on cocoa (not the milky one on the nose, somehow more bitter). Toffee and caramel, reconnecting to the finish.
Probably the only weak point, as the low ABV makes the dram very neat and pleasant, but short lasting. A delicate whisper of red fruit and a touch of honey and caramel.
Kavalan Triple Sherry is a very well crafted product, from a distillery which is continuing experimenting on sherry casks, after the several varieties of the Solist line (Oloroso, PX, Fino, Moscatel, Amontillado) and the 46% ABV Oloroso Sherry Cask. This bottling is very easy to drink, thanks to the introductory 40% ABV, however the experience is everything but basic; several different notes are building up a rather complex set of aromas and tastes, and the impact is rather tasty and intense on the nose and on the palate. The only remark we can move is towards the finish, which is rather short.
