Kilkerran is the single malt produced at Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown, revived in 2004 by J&A Mitchell & Co, the family firm behind Springbank, after the site had stood silent for some 77 years. It is one of only three working distilleries in Campbeltown, and the whisky is released under the Kilkerran name rather than Glengyle because the latter was already in use for a blend. The 16 Year Old has been part of the core range since 2020 and is issued as an annual batch, matured in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks whose proportions shift from year to year, with some releases also including a small share of rum casks. It is bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and without added colouring.
Peat and charcoal on the nose, together with a rich note of vanilla. Yellow fruit follows, then a mineral hint. After a few moments, a rich vein of citrus emerges too.
Clean, with rich peaty notes accompanied by seasoned wood, wood spice, cinnamon and a mineral edge.
Medium-long, with ash, charcoal and seasoned wood.
Overall, the Kilkerran 16 Year Old is a rich Scotch with a well-structured flavour profile, even if it is not particularly broad. The peat is clearly present, but it never overwhelms the other aromas.
