La Hechicera, Spanish for "The Enchantress," is the flagship expression of the Riascos family, Colombia's only family-run rum company with three generations of experience in fine rum production. It was founded in 2012 and based in Barranquilla on the Caribbean coast. The Reserva Familiar is a blend of rums produced via the solera method, matured in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels for between 12 and 21 years in the hot and humid microclimate of the Colombian coast. It is bottled without additives.
Marshmallows open the nose with a soft, confectionery sweetness, followed by wood, caramel and honey. A touch of milk chocolate rounds out the flavor profile.
Sweet from the first sip. Caramel and honey carry forward from the nose, joined by a gentle nuttiness. Vanilla beans then take centre stage alongside ganache, giving the mid-palate a deep, almost pastry-like character.
Medium length. Ganache and rich vanilla linger alongside a quiet presence of wood, closing in a warm and satisfying way.
Overall, La Hechicera Reserva Familiar is a very easy rum to enjoy, thanks to a sweet and silky flavor profile that never feels heavy-handed. Vanilla is the dominant thread throughout, deep and consistent from nose to finish.
