Minoki is a Japanese rum brand and this bottling is built from a blend of aged Japanese and Pacific rums, finished in Mizunara, a Japanese oak, and then filtered through bleached corals collected from the Japanese coastline, a step the producer links to the rum's smoothness. The name refers to Minoki, an ocean princess from Japanese legend said to have ruled the sea from a palace of coral, and the "coral filtered" tagline draws on the same story; the brand states that it directs part of its proceeds to coral reef conservation.
Fragrant aromas of fine wood emerge from the outset, accompanied by a note of wood varnish. After a few moments in the glass, ripe tropical fruit takes over, with dates and raisins standing out.
On the palate the wood carries through, now enriched with notes of vanilla pod and a touch of wood spice.
