Montebello is produced at the Carrère distillery in Capesterre-Belle-Eau, on the southern slope of the Soufrière volcano in Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe. Founded in 1930, it is one of the most traditional agricole producers on the island, known for making the most successful traditional agricultural rum of Guadeloupe. The 6 Year Old is a vintage expression, not a blend, aged in American oak barrels that previously held bourbon and cognac, in the tropical climate of Guadeloupe. It is bottled at 42% ABV without additives, as required by the Guadeloupe GI framework.
A riot of sugar cane scents and pepper opens the nose, followed by brine, ripe tropical fruits and olives. Vivid and assertive from the first sniff, with the classic green and vegetal character typical of Guadeloupe agricole.
Sugar cane, green olives and brine carry through from the nose, joined by peppery notes and a light saltiness. The palate is honest but somewhat leaner than the nose suggested, without fully delivering on the complexity the aromatic picture promised.
Medium length. Brine and green olives persist, closing in a clean and characterful way.
Overall, the Montebello Rhum Vieux Agricole 6 Year Old is a rum where the nose promises more than the palate ultimately delivers. The flavor profile is complex and structured, the palate, while pleasant, does not quite follow through on that initial complexity, leaving the overall impression slightly unbalanced. Still an interesting expression of the Guadeloupe style.
