The Neisson distillery has been producing rhum agricole at Le Carbet, on the North Caribbean coast of Martinique, since 1931. A family-owned and fully independent house, it cultivates its own sugarcane across its estate and distils on the original column still designed by Jean Neisson, one of the few surviving Creole column stills in Martinique. L'Empyreumatique belongs to the Itinéraires collection, a series of limited annual releases each exploring a specific aromatic direction. Its name derives from the Greek "empyreuma", an evocation of fire and heat, the common thread of its aromatic expression. Aged for 8 years and bottled at natural strength, it is a blend of rhums aged in cognac and bourbon barrels, distilled from pure cane juice in a Creole column still, bottled at 50.8% without reduction or cold filtration. Limited to 2,000 bottles.
Candied fruit, banana and honey open generously, joined by eucalyptus, burnt sugarcane juice and vegetal hints. Orange peel and a touch of vanilla complete the picture, giving the nose an exceptional breadth that ranges from roasted and herbal to sweet and tropical.
Smooth and round despite the strength. Apricot and stone fruit lead, followed by vegetal notes, vanilla, cinnamon and medicinal aromas that recall the eucalyptus thread from the nose. Layered and progressive, with each sip revealing something new.
Long and smooth. Pepper, cloves, grapefruit and licorice linger in a complex and satisfying close that extends well beyond the swallow.
Overall, the Neisson L'Empyreumatique is a rich and extraordinarily balanced rhum. The flavor profile is exceptionally broad, deep and structured, moving with ease from tropical fruit sweetness to roasted, herbal and spiced complexity. A magnificent, meditative rhum that rewards the patience to sit with it properly.
