Oxbow Rum Distillery sits in Pointe Coupée Parish, Louisiana, one of only a handful of true single-estate producers in the United States, where the sugarcane fields, mill and stills all fall under one roof. The Stewart family has grown cane on this land since 1859, and the operation, rebranded from Three Roll Estate in 2022, takes its name from the sweeping oxbow bends of the Mississippi River that shape the surrounding terroir. Under president Olivia Stewart and distiller Cole Brannum, Oxbow makes both molasses-based rum and this agricole-style rhum, distilled from fresh-pressed cane juice fermented within hours of harvest. The Rhum Louisiane Single Barrel is the estate's rarest expression: distilled just once a year, aged two years in new American oak, then hand-selected and bottled one barrel at a time.
Sugared almond opens the nose, joined by vanilla, gentle vegetal nuances and a clear backbone of oak.
Rich toasted notes lead the way, followed by vanilla and oak, alongside vegetal nuances that turn more herbal here than they were on the nose.
Medium-long, peppery and woody, closing on a touch of maraschino.
Overall, the Oxbow Rhum Louisiane Single Barrel is balanced, rich and intense. The flavour profile shows a nice structure, even if it is not especially complex.
