Rittenhouse Straight Rye Bottled in Bond is a product from the Bernheim Distillery, the largest independent, family-owned Bourbon Distillery in the world, property of Heaven Hill, a company famous for several successful brands such as Elijah Craig, Larceny, Evan Williams. This rye has a storied past with a heritage that commemorates Philadelphia's famous Rittenhouse Square, named in 1825 after David Rittenhouse an astronomer and a scientist, first director of US mint. This expression uses a mash composed of 51% rye, 37% corn and 12% malted barley and it is bottled in bond, thus produced only in a single season and from a single distillery. It is then aged for approx. 4 years.
Mellow rye, the herbal balsamic components are mild and well integrated, sweetened by an orange character. Gently candied orange zest. Toffee. Spices are sweet and pleasant.
Juicy, rich, citrus orange notes, with sweet oak spice including cinnamon and nutmeg. Vanilla is present but rather complex and good quality. Slightly peppery.
Medium duration, with a citrus / orange side that is well balanced by the sweet spices quality. Later the semi-sweet, more peppery side comes out.
Rittenhouse Straight Rye Bottled in Bond is overall a balanced and well integrated rye whisky, where sweetness and mellow, round rye balsamic components are playing together providing a good quality, intense and rather complex experience.
