Ron Larimar is a brand owned by Angus Dundee Distillers, the Scottish group also behind Tomintoul and Glencadam whiskies. Named after the rare blue variety of pectolite mineral found exclusively in the Dominican Republic, the brand sources aged rums from the island and finishes them in various cask types. The Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish is first matured in American oak ex-bourbon barrels in the Dominican Republic, then transferred to hand-selected Oloroso Sherry butts from Andalusia, Spain, for a finishing period, bringing the total time in oak to 5 years. The distillery of origin is not disclosed.
Butterscotch, caramel and honey open the nose generously, with a touch of vanilla completing the picture. The Oloroso influence is present but subtle, keeping things sweet and approachable rather than deeply complex.
Sweet on entry, with caramel and cocoa carrying through alongside honeyed nuances. The overall character stays on the sweeter side throughout, without much evolution.
Medium-short. Caramel lingers and then fades fairly quickly, leaving little behind.
Overall, the Ron Larimar Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish is a sweet and easy-drinking rum, accessible and pleasant, but somewhat limited both in aromatic width and structure. The Oloroso finish adds a confectionery richness that tips the overall profile toward the sweet side without fully delivering the dried fruit and nutty complexity one might expect from this cask type.
