Savanna has been producing rum since 1870 at the foot of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano on Réunion Island. After more than a century at the original Domaine Savanna site, the distillery relocated in 1992 to the rainy, fertile north-east coast of the island, at the Domaine Bois Rouge in Saint André. This release marks the 30th anniversary of that move. It is a blend of 6 casks of très vieux rhum agricole, limited to 3,200 bottles, bottled at cask strength.
Intriguing from the first sniff, with a complex vegetal aroma intertwined with olive brine. Leather and herbal notes follow, lending the nosing a distinctly "green" character. After a while in the glass, hints of pastry and citrus emerge, softening the initial intensity.
A bomb of spices, with wood spices, wild pepper and some piquant peaks driving the palate forward. The olive brine and leather noted on the nose are confirmed here, joined by some bitter flavors. The profile is rich and intense, yet the alcohol is very well integrated, and the palate stays coherent with what the nose promised.
Long. Olive brine, spices and leather persist, intense and rich. Well balanced, the finish delivers a nice complexity, with some bitter notes that make this expression not for every consumer.
Overall, the Savanna Edition Bois Rouge stands apart from the more fruit-forward style typical of Martinique or Guadeloupe agricoles. The green, vegetal, olive-brine character is its signature, and this 30-year-old single-batch release shows it at full strength, rewarding drinkers who appreciate savory, bitter-edged complexity over straightforward sweetness. The flavor profile is not for everybody.
