The Kyoto Murasaki-Obi is a 2022 release from the Kyoto prefecture distillery, characterized by a purple label. More details about the distillery and this series of bottlings can be found here.
Delicate as in the Japanese whisky tradition, however with some character: a touch of unripe white/yellow fruit (lychees, apple, sweet lemon) if followed by a fresh, light and ethereal smoke of balsamic/medicinal nature, with also a fresh cut grass hint. Simple, yet fresh and pleasant.
The sip shows a little more salty character than expected, which gives a different dimension to the continuation of white/yellow fruity sensations. The fruit is however short lasting, overwhelmed by the salt and the light maltiness. Creaminess is present and pleasant.
Medium duration, again the mineral hints are the ones which are resounding longer, on top of some white fruity creaminess. Smoke is very careful.
The Kyoto Murasaki-Obi is a nice product, which preserves some of the light and creamy traditional Japanese whisky aspects, with a light smoke and a more convinced mineral part on top. Layered, even though not truly complex, simple to drink and enjoyable.
