Trois Rivières is one of Martinique's oldest estates, with a history dating back to 1660 when Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV's Superintendent of Finance, was granted a vast concession in the south of the island. The distillery produces AOC Martinique rhum agricole exclusively from fresh sugarcane juice, distilled in a copper column still. The Rhum Vieux de l'Océan belongs to the "Bar Editions" collection and carries a distinctive production detail: cellar master Daniel Baudin chose to reduce the rum from 75° down to 54° not with fresh water, but with filtered seawater taken from off the coast of Le Diamant, in the south of Martinique.
Mineral and salty, with a nuance of lemon peel and broader citrus. Honey then follows, adding a welcome sweetness, alongside a touch of wild pepper that gives the nose an uncommon and intriguing edge.
Wood and wild pepper lead, supported by oak, vanilla and fresh sugarcane. The 54% ABV is remarkably well integrated, bringing presence without aggression. A pleasant salinity runs through the mid-palate, joined by iodine and roasted aromas that add depth and savory complexity.
Medium long. Oak and mineral notes carry through to the end, finishing on the drier side in a clean and focused way.
Overall, the Trois Rivières Rhum Vieux de l'Océan delivers a rich and savory flavor profile that is genuinely uncommon in the category. The seawater reduction is not a gimmick: it shapes the character of the rum from nose to finish in a coherent and well-executed way. The profile is wide, the ABV integration is impressive, and the overall result is a rhum vieux agricole with a strong personality and real distinction.
