Waterford Heritage Goldthorpe is a 2024 release belonging to the Arcadian Farm Origins series, which is said to explore the old natural flavors. Waterford mentions it uses for this single malt only the iconic variety Goldthorpe of Heritage barley, found as a single, fortuitous mutation in a Yorkshire barley field in 1889. Over half a century later, the pioneering barley breeder, Dr Hunter, declared, ‘It was, & still is, one of the best quality varieties in existence.’
Very characteristic and similar to the Heritage Hunter of few years ago, with a dark roasted sensation of earthy barley bread, however with much sweeter variations, with gold sultanas, golden plums and honeyed almonds. Some dry barnyard and hay notes are given off in the second nose.
Thick and oily, with a perfect ABV. Sweet lemon and granola, still with a confirmed sweet barley character. There is also a minor bitter aftertaste, much less than in Hunter. It gets drier in the second part, with herbal background. Original and convincing.
Medium duration, with earthy barley and some dark notes, backed up by a bready sweetness.
Waterford Heritage Goldthorpe is another nice Heritage release, with several notes in common with the Hunter, yet some sweeter and fruitier aspects which makes the experience different and never simple. The flavor profile is rather complex, and the taste unique, different from the vast majority of currently available whiskies.
