Yamazaki Smoky Batch The First is the second Limited Edition bottling for the duty free market, launched in 2023 for the 100 years anniversary of Suntory, the first Japanese whiskey distillery.
Structured, complex and rich. Several layers, interconnected. It is definitely sweet, with an excellent orange honey core, apricots and peaches, ripe yet not overripe. Feelings of Sauternes. There is indeed also a buttery sensation, such as a mix of salty German butter, church candles and wax. The peat reminds of incense and light smoke.
Less sweet than on the nose, with the peat that finds a salty, almost maritime note, quite balanced and long-lasting. The fruity aspects are less ripe and sweet, more vibrant and oriented to sweet lemon, pineapple and yellow melon. Also less buttery than the nose, yet nicely filling the mouth with layers of taste. Dense.
Medium-long, rich, with some sweetness well balanced by balsamic aromatic herbs notes and a minor salty touch. Some minor dryness. Very coherent.
Yamazaki Smoky Batch The First is an excellent release, where the minor, classy peated notes are added as an extra layer of complexity to a very structured, rich and beautiful spirit, fruity and with a unique texture, buttery on the nose and dense and oily at the palate. A true masterpiece.
