Zacapa El Alma is the second release of the Heavenly Cask Collection, a limited series created by master blender Lorena Vásquez. Each expression in the collection celebrates a specific cask type used in the aging of Zacapa 23. El Alma, meaning "The Soul," is a blend of rums aged 6 to 23 years via the solera method, finished in heavily charred American ex-whiskey barrels.
Scents of caramel and toffee open, followed by roasted coffee that adds a darker, drier dimension. A balsamic thread then emerges, recalling star anise and lending a faint herbal depth. Molasses closes the nose.
Sweet from the first sip. Caramel and toffee carry over from the nose with ease, now joined by a light touch of oak. Raisins add a modest dried-fruit note.

Zacapa El Alma is a rum that makes no effort to conceal its very sweet base. The flavor profile is not among the widest: complexity is limited, and the short finish leaves the drinker wanting more to hold onto. Enjoyable as a straightforward after-dinner pour, particularly for those approaching Zacapa's house style for the first time.
