Yoichi 10yo is the new 2022 release of a discontinued single malt from the Nikka distillery.
Very fruity, an ode to yellow and orange fruit complexity, without forgetting a refreshing touch and a pinch of salt / minerality. The fruity core is of peaches, apricots, yellow ripe apples and sweet lemon zests. From one side the fruit is splashed with custard cream, from another the essential oils side is quite high and aromatic, with lime, orange, grapefruit. The final hint is salty and mineral, tracing back to the DNA of the distillery. Much more refined and fruity than the NAS, the entry level of the distillery.
Now the mineral dimension takes over the fruity core, which is still refined and nice, however in the background of a salty, slightly spicy initial sip, which at moments reaches even a light peat. It is warm without being alcoholic. After this initial intense minerality, a warm sweetness takes over, with vanilla icing and butter-rich biscuits.
Medium-short, perhaps a little too much compared to expectations. Still mineral, but mainly fresh and light, floral and citrus.
Yoichi 10 yo is a very interesting release, with a sophisticated and fruity, yet complex nose with several different layers. The palate and especially the finish are slightly simpler, less complex and varied, and at moments even less elegant. Overall a product which is providing some hints of the best characteristics of the distillery, for a very high price point.
