Armorik Yeun Elez 5yo 2020 ex-sherry Hogshead Itineraires is a 2025 release from the French distillery for the Itineraries Collection from La Maison du Whiskey. In September 2020 David Roussier launched a peated variation of the Armorik single malt: the Yeun Elez, named after the peat bogs located in the heart of the Monts d'Arrée. This bottling has a phenol content of 50 ppm.
Very open and flavorful, rich and creamy. The texture in particular can easily be reconducted to the Armorik spirit, and reminds virgin oak aged bottlings. Creme of cherries and cassis. There is an herbal component which can be reconducted to sweet licorice and some flowery notes. The sweetness is pronounced, while the alcohol is extremely well managed for this ABV. It is peated, yet not in an invasive and marine way, rather in a earthy way.
There is a touch of bitter sensation on top of the sweet core of cooked red fruit compote, which is far more evident when compared to the nose. Alcohol is still rather silent. Warm, expressive and intense.
Medium duration, probably the best part, again with warm red fruit compote and balanced sweetness. Peat is there, yet not preminent.
Armorik Yeun Elez 5yo 2020 ex-sherry Hogshead Itineraires is an interesting release from a series including very nice bottlings. The peat is well integrated in the sherry maturation, and at moments is not even the protagonist despite quite a respectful phenol content. It is warm, intense and centered on cooked red fruit. The alcohol content is very well managed. Maybe the sherried sensations are not the most refined tested in other products.
