New Riff Distilling just announced the limited-edition Sherry Finished Malted Rye Whiskey. This Rye goes through a finish in Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. The distillery used custom-made 53-gallon Spanish sherry casks and filled them with 5-year-old New Riff Malted Rye Whiskey. Then twelve oloroso and three Pedro Ximenez casks were filled with the whiskey and aged for another year, before being vatted in the fall of 2021. After that, they were left together for several months until they were bottled in the spring of 2022.
Co-founder Jay Erisman stated, “last year we released our Malted Rye Whiskey, and experiencing its remarkably elegant, sophisticated character gave us another idea, we think of it as a malt whiskey first and a rye whiskey second, which raised the question: what would happen if we treated it like other malt whiskies and aged it in sherry casks?”
Bottled at barrel strength (112.7 proof. 56.85%) without chill-filtration, it will be available from May, the SRP is $64.99.
