Ardbeg Scorch is the 2021 release of annual Ardbeg Limited Edition. This review is of the market release, which often differs from the Committee Release because of the lower ABV. On Islay for many years the Ileach (the inhabitants of the island) have handed down stories and legends about a dragon that haunted the island and that was eventually defeated by a heroic warrior. Ardbeg wanted to pay tribute to this legend by presenting a whisky featuring an aging in heavily charred barrels, stored in the legendary dunnage n.3 of the distillery.
Fresh sea water and lemon/orange peel, a very distant buff of smoke, minor compared to the marine and acidic notes, paired by caramel sweetness. Thyme and fresh aromatic herbs. A pale sweet note (caramel and caramel cake) on the main acidic character. Simple, not unpleasant.
Salty and mineral, again an ode to the sea. A little mono-dimensional in its intentions to reproduce the nose without any extra note. Creamy, without the buttery texture of other similar products. Again toffee and burnt yellow fruit.
Medium duration, clean and sweet, burnt, again not unpleasant but a very average sensation.
Ardbeg Scorch is not a bad whisky, easy to drink and enjoy, with marine character on top of a sweet component, varied by some acidic notes. Its limits have to be found in a very simple palette, reminding several other Islay releases, without the intensity, the diversity or the buttery texture of some of the best samples with a similar profile tried in the past.
