Isle of Harris The Hearach, launched on 22 Sep 2023, is the first whisky from the Island of Harris after the Pabbay clearances of the 1840s. Water is sourced from Abhainn Cnoc a’ Charrain and it is said to feature very low minerality, while barley is 100% Scottish Concerto one, lightly peated at 12-15ppm using peat cut by hand at 'Cleite Mhòr'. The casks are kept near to the west-coast village of Ardhasaig. On a side note, it is truly lovely to watch in their website many people from the Outer Hebridean Islands pronouncing the name of this release in their dialect.
Very minor, distant smoke is enveloping interesting warm fruity notes of ripe peaches, red apples, floral honey. Rather complex and elegant, yet fresh.
Again warm and silky, rich in sophisticated sherry influences without being over-exposed to the cask wood. Creamy and fruity, Malaga ice cream and fresh chopped summer peaches, with a nutty finish.
Longer than expected, on nuts and a minor smoke
Isle of Harris The Hearach is a rather complex, elegant whisky; despite the short aging shows very interesting signs of fruity aromas and the peat is very well integrated and never too evident. The minor floral honey note is for sure excellent and very evocative. Excellent first release.
