Port Askaig 28yo has been bottled by Speciality Drinks using spirit crafted at undisclosed distilleries on Islay. The name of the brand refers to the port nestled into the north coast of the island, which has served as the gateway to Islay for hundreds of years. This expression is one of the oldest in the core range, even though a 45 years old release is also available in the core range.
A fresh, marine and herbal peat is proposed, with a background note of acidic yellow stone fruit (unripe peach and plum). Quince jam and smoked almonds.
Balanced, not as salty as expected. Smoke is just the essence, with a return of yellow unripe fruit on top to a creamy sweet caramel base.
Medium length, well balanced between the smoky part and the mellow fruity side, which becomes less unripe step by step, with a sweet sugary finish, not unpleasant.
Port Askaig 28yo is a good classic peated spirit, well balanced between the smoky character (briny and vegetal) and a fruity side which varies between acidic and unripe to more mellow and sweet in the finish. An interesting product with a simple to enjoy fruition. Complexity is not as deep as expected from such an aged product.
