Smooth Ambler Old Scout 7yo is a straight bourbon made with a mashbill of 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malt which has been bottled at the small Smooth Ambler Spirits distillery in West Virginia. It was awarded 94.5 points in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible in 2016, where he pleased the "brilliant nose and the fabulous clarity of the spirit".
Very traditional bourbon-style, with intense caramel, orange peel and vanilla bean of good quality, reminding of the sweet drops for spongy cake base. Some smooth woody character, without the driest of the spices. Pleasant and mellow, maybe not too profound or complex.
Intensity is rather good. Entrance is quite sweet, with a triumph of hardcore vanilla and caramel, only mitigated by some orange juice and some sweet spices, the latter definitely more present than in the nose.
Drier and little more sapid than the other steps. The tangerine component is the longest lasting one, with some distant honey.
Smooth Ambler Old Scout 7yo is a good bourbon with some interesting notes, especially concerning the absence of very pronounced woody components, in favor of a sweet, fruity profile with sweet spices (cinnamon). At the same time the absence of a more complex palette is the main limitation, for a product mainly centered to standard caramel, orange and vanilla flavors. Intensity is rather good.
