Willett 4 Year Old Family Estate Bottled Rye is an expression from the distillery found in 1936 by Thompson Willett. In 2015 the Two Years Old Rye version, the first whiskey coming off the Willett copper pot still, was released.
Corn sweetness and an important woody character for a very open product. Toffee is also very important, backed up by a strong, almost chemical vanilla note. Aromatic herbs notes are just a distant hint. Traditional, not unpleasant but rather static and mono-dimensional.
Entrance is bitter (very dark chocolate) at times, with some unbalanced notes that are reminding of a basic sugary orange juice. Vanilla is also basic, but very bold. Elegance is not the main gift of the product. Wood is less present.
The slightly bitter component continues in the finish, similar to bitter orange peel.
Willett 4 Year Old Family Estate Bottled Rye is not the most rewarding of the ryes; while the nose can provide some of the main tracts of the US spirit, with bold vanilla and corn sweetness, the palate goes deeper into basic, not truly refined aromas, adding a bitter, not really enjoyable component.
