Woodford Reserve Kentucky Derby Bottle Edition 147 has been presented in 2021. Every year Woodford Reserve, as the official presenting sponsor bourbon of the Kentucky Derby, releases a commemorative Derby bottle. The label features the watercolor of thoroughbreds on the stretch by Richard Sullivan, a former professional baseball player. This bourbon has a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley.
Slightly closed at the beginning, yet interesting. Very mild orange and cherry, with ripe banana and good quality vanilla. Almost floral, fresh wet grass, a whisper more than something spelled out loud. Minimal allspice. Honey, a non-sweet version.
Delicate, quite coherent with palate. Soft texture, proposing again the fruity aspects of the nose, with a slightly warmer tone, thanks to the increasing allspices. Very balanced and silky.
More herbal, balsamic and slightly bitter than the nose and the palate. The overall result is refreshing and quite particular. Sweetness is again under control.
Woodford Reserve Kentucky Derby Bottle Edition 147 is a very particular experience; the aromatic profile is coherent with classic bourbons, however the overall strength is very contained, and the oak/vanilla combination allows a more complete, fruity palette to shine. The finish is herbal and slightly bitter, more similar to rye whiskies, without losing the soft texture. Surprising compared to many bourbons, an exercise of velvety texture and balance.
