Waterford Distillery Arcadian Series Biodynamic Luna 1.1 US Launch

Waterford Distillery has announced the US launch of their Arcadian Series Biodynamic Luna 1.1. This is the world’s first whisky made from biodynamic Irish barley. Luna 1.1 was originally released in international markets over the summer of 2021, but this will be the first time the Luna will hit the US. The Arcadian Series focuses on rare barely varieties, and methods of farming that have been lost with modern technology. Biodynamics are not usually found in whisky making, but most seen with wine.

The Irish growers that took the lead on the project are Trevor Harris, John McDonnell, and Alan Mooney. They used some unusual farming principles from the 1924 lectures of Austrian polymath Rudolf Steiner. The lectures were about post World War 1 industrial agriculture. Those sometimes odd Biodynamics like burying cow horns that are packed with manure in the ground, and following the lunar calendar, were used for the barley farming. The natural, but odd process, produces a chemical free soil.

Arcadian Biodynamic Luna 1.1 is matured in a combination of 35% first-fill American oak, 17% virgin American oak, 26% French oak, and 22% Vin Doux natural oak. Luna is bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV). There will be around 21,000 total bottles for worldwide distribution. The US release bottles will be available for an MSRP of $125.
