High West American Prairie Reserve Bourbon is a small-batch blend of two straight bourbons, a 6 year from Seagrams in Lawrenceberg, Indiana (mashbill of 75% Corn, 20% rye, 5% barley malt) and a 10 year old from Four Roses (mashbill of 60% Corn, 35% rye, and 5% barley malt). The name was given after the wildlife reserve in northeastern Montana. High West is also donating 10% of profits from this whiskey to the project.
Intense woody and vanilla notes are immediately delivered, with a sort of paint varnish sensation, a sign alcohol is not fully integrated. Toffee, quite important especially in the second part, with a persistent orange peel note.
Alcohol is also quite present at the beginning of the palatal experience, a rather sharp edge. Tastes are intense and woody spices are quite vibrant. Sweetness is later taking over with toffee, apple crumble, vanilla pod. A touch of anise, slightly bitter at times.
Medium duration, slightly darker and more bitter than the rest of the fruition, reminding of wood and toffee. Spices are still tingling the point of the tongue.
High West American Prairie Reserve Bourbon is overall an interesting bourbon; the ABV pushes tastes to a good level of intensity, however it is possible to perceive a not fully integrated alcoholic component which becomes sharp at times. Toffee, vanilla and wood are the (typical) main aromas, even though a slightly bitter orange peel note makes things interesting and more varied.
